CABLES
SilverStone have opted for individually sleeved embossed cables, which improves flexibility and cable management. These are also more aesthetically pleasing than traditional ribbon cables.
NOISE PROFILE
SilverStone Extreme 1200R features fan stop functionality upto 300W and produces very little noise, even at loads as high as 1100W. It received an A- noise rating by Cybenetics, the same as the Extreme 850R. This makes it one of the quietest 1200W SFX-L power supply available at time of writing. During our time using the 1200R, we haven’t noticed any distracting fan behaviours such as motor feedback noise, or coil whine.
We were only able to test upto 700W, running 13900K and RTX 4080 Super under simultaneous synthetic stress test conditions. This demonstrates just how much headroom is available, even with highest end systems.
SUMMARY/CONCLUSIONS
SilverStone’s Extreme 1200R includes flexible individually sleeved embossed cables and a fluid dynamic bearing fan. These provide improved cable management and alleviate fan motor noise. It features an optional 300W semi-passive mode and remains quiet upto loads as high as 1100W. These factors combined, along with its 1200W rating make the Extreme 1200R both technically impressive and overkill.
The main drawback with the Extreme 1200R is the SFX-L form factor, making it roughly 25% longer than SFX. For those requiring a smaller power supply, see the Extreme 850R. While 1200R is technically impressive, the Extreme 1200R is not a cheap power supply. This means most users will likely be priced out of purchasing at $359 per unit.
