CABLES
Extreme 850R includes standard assortment of ribbon cables, with exception of 12VHPWR cable. The 12VHPWR cable uses softer material which is more flexible.
850R’s 12VHPWR cable is limited to 450W. 1000 watts of available power delivery is typically recommended for runnung full 600W via 12VHPWR.
NOISE PROFILE
SilverStone’s Extreme 850R is one of the quietest SFX power supplies available at time of writing. It remains quiet, even at loads as high as 700W.
HYBRID MODE
850R features two minute delayed shut off function. This is controlled by a small switch on the power suppy. When the 200W semi-passive mode is enabled, delayed shut off feature is disabled. You may find disabling semi-passive mode preferable in activities such as video editing or with higher wattage CPU’s. This will avoid the power supply fan rapidly turning on/off with CPU load spikes, which can be quite distracting.
SF750 vs. 850R
Corsair’s SF750 & SilverStone’s Extreme 850R are very comparable power supplies in terms of performance. SF750 has 300W semi-passive mode vs. 200W on Extreme 850R. The 850R is quieter at high loads, compared to SF750 being marginally quieter at lower loads.
SUMMERY / CONCLUSIONS
SilverStone’s Extreme 850R is an easy recommendation for anyone with RTX 4000 series graphics card and high-end CPU. It is one of the best SFX power supplies available at time of writing. It features quiet operation at both low~high loads and natively supports 12VHPWR. What let’s the 850R down is the lack of individually sleeved cables, such as those included with 1200R and the fan stop functionality being limited to 200W.
